India’s electric vehicle (EV) market closed December 2025 on a mixed note, with overall registrations touching 202,510 units, even as demand varied sharply across segments and states, according to recent data by JMK Research & Analytics.

Monthly sales trends show December registrations easing from October’s peak of 234,019 units and November’s 216,938 units, but broadly in line with the second half of the year. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the market remained firmly in growth territory.

The report highlighted that high-speed electric two-wheelers (HS E2Ws) continued to be the largest segment. December sales stood at 97,368 units, a 17% month-on-month decline but a strong 33% increase compared with December 2024. The top three manufacturers, TVS, Bajaj, and Ather, accounted for around 63% of total E2W registrations, indicating continued market concentration.

Passenger electric three-wheelers (E3W Passenger) recorded 77,769 units during the month. This marked a 7% sequential rise and a sharp 51% YoY increase. Despite growth, the segment remained fragmented, with the top eight players collectively accounting for about 39% of the market.

Cargo electric three-wheelers saw softer momentum. Registrations slipped 3% month-on-month to 10,502 units, though volumes were still up 32% from a year earlier. The top eight players controlled roughly 32% of this segment.

Electric car sales reached 14,887 units in December. Volumes were broadly flat month-on-month, rising 1%, but jumped 70% YoY. Tata Motors retained its leadership position, accounting for about 43% of total electric car registrations.

Electric buses delivered the fastest growth rates too. Sales rose to 569 units, up 54% from November and more than tripling YoY, with a 214% increase. Switch Mobility led the segment with a 31% share, followed by JBM Auto at 24%.

Electric two-wheelers made up 48.08% of total EV sales, while passenger electric three-wheelers accounted for 38.40%. Electric cars contributed 7.35%, cargo three-wheelers 5.19%, and electric buses just 0.28%.

Regionally, West Bengal emerged as the largest EV market in December, accounting for 30,944 units, about 15% of national volumes. Uttar Pradesh recorded 29,300 units, followed by Maharashtra at 19,152 units.

West Bengal’s jump from a mid-table position earlier in the year was driven mainly by a surge in electric three-wheeler registrations after the state enforced mandatory e-rickshaw registration rules.
