Pushing its renewable energy capacity to 209.44GW, India reportedly shattered records in 2024, adding 24.5GW of solar and 3.4GW of wind power.
The year 2024 has been eventful for India’s renewable energy sector, adding a ‘record-breaking’ 24.5GW of solar power capacity, alongside approximately 3.4GW of wind power, according to a report by the JMK Research. The figures mark a substantial increase from the previous year, with solar installations more than doubling and wind capacity rising by around 21%.
This brings India’s total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity to 209.44GW by December 2024. Solar power alone now accounts for nearly 47% of the country’s overall RE capacity, solidifying its role as the leading source within the renewable energy sector.
In detail, India added 18.5GW of new utility-scale solar capacity, nearly three times the amount installed in 2023. Rajasthan led the way in utility-scale solar, contributing 7.09GW, followed by Gujarat at 4.32GW and Tamil Nadu at 1.73GW. Together, these three states made up 71% of the total new utility-scale solar capacity installed across India in 2024.
The rooftop solar market also saw notable expansion, with India adding 4.59GW of capacity, reflecting a 53% increase compared to 2023. A key driver of this growth was the launch of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which resulted in the installation of over 700,000 rooftop solar systems within just ten months.
Off-grid solar capacity also experienced remarkable growth, with 1.48 GW added in 2024, a whopping 197% increase from the previous year. This category includes off-grid and distributed solar systems, further diversifying the country’s renewable energy landscape.

On the wind energy front, India added 3.4GW of new capacity in 2024, a 21% increase over 2023. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu were the dominant contributors, collectively accounting for 98% of the new wind capacity. Gujarat alone contributed 1250MW, followed by Karnataka with 1135MW and Tamil Nadu with 980MW.
As the report stated, the renewable energy additions of 2024 signal India’s continued commitment to its green energy transition
