AMD Commits £2 Billion To Boost UK’s AI Growth

Could a £2 billion technology investment reshape Britain’s AI ambitions? AMD’s latest commitment targets research, infrastructure and skills development across the UK.

AMD has announced plans to invest up to £2 billion in the United Kingdom over the next five years, aiming to expand artificial intelligence (AI) research, computing infrastructure and workforce development across the country.

The commitment, unveiled during London Tech Week (8 to 12 June 2026), includes a series of partnerships with universities, research institutions, and technology companies to strengthen the UK’s AI ecosystem and expand access to advanced computing resources.

The initiative aligns with the government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and AI Hardware Strategy.

“The United Kingdom has the talent, research excellence and ambition to help lead the next era of AI,” said Dr Lisa Su, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of AMD. “AMD is proud to deepen our commitment to the UK and work with partners across government, academia and industry to expand access to the compute infrastructure needed to advance sovereign AI, accelerate discovery and drive long-term economic growth.”

As part of the programme, AMD will collaborate with Imperial College London to support computational science research, including projects in healthcare and climate modelling. The two organisations will also explore opportunities to optimise AI models, scientific workflows and data-intensive applications using AMD hardware and software platforms.

AMD is also partnering with Oriole Networks to support the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) Scaling Inference Lab initiative. The project will evaluate new methods for scaling AI inference workloads by combining photonic networking technology with AMD’s computing platforms.

The effort is expected to contribute to the development of a large-scale AI system powered by a photonic network.

In addition, AMD and Dell Technologies are supporting the University of Cambridge’s Zenith AI supercomputer and the Sunrise fusion AI system, developed in partnership with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). The systems will support research in areas including healthcare, climate science, engineering, materials research and fusion energy.

Welcoming the investment, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said it demonstrated confidence in Britain’s AI sector and research capabilities. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the commitment would help strengthen computing infrastructure, support innovation and contribute to future job creation across the country.
