Henkel Announces Carbon-Neutral Production At Its Manufacturing Sites

Henkel set an agenda to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations and value chain.

With an agenda to decarbonise its operations by 2030, Henkel has recently announced that it has started carbon-neutral production at its Adhesive Technologies manufacturing facilities in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Türkiye. The company could fulfil its commitment by eliminating Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across its operations and advancing its science-based climate targets.

Henkel has eliminated fossil fuel consumption at its Kurkumbh facility in Maharashtra by replacing furnace oil-based thermic fluid heaters with high-efficiency electric systems. The transition has required major upgrades to the site’s energy infrastructure, including heat-load optimisation, installation of advanced heat exchangers, and enhanced electrical capacity to support full electrification. When combined with the use of 100% renewable electricity, the initiative eliminated approximately 11,300 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions annually.

The company has replaced a natural gas-fired boiler at its Gebkim plant in Türkiye with a high-efficiency electric boiler system. Through this initiative, the site has replaced direct fossil fuel use, which automatically reduces Scope 1 emissions to zero and cuts around 956 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions each year.

“Achieving carbon-neutral production at two of our key flagship sites in IMEA is a strong step forward in delivering on Henkel Adhesive Technologies’ global sustainability ambitions,” said Simon Ulmann, Vice President Supply Chain & Operations IMEA, Henkel Adhesive Technologies.

He added that the company is systematically replacing fossil fuel-based processes with electrified systems powered by renewable energy as part of its broader journey toward net-zero operations.

Commenting on the achievement in India, Bappa Bandyopadhyay, Director Operations & Projects India, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said the milestone reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, responsible manufacturing, and operational excellence.

By achieving this milestone, Henkel aims to reduce the carbon footprint of both its operations and value chain while helping customers achieve their own sustainability objectives.

The company agreed that the Kurkumbh and Gebkim facilities’ success demonstrates that fossil-fuel-free manufacturing can be scaled across regions, supporting the transition toward a more sustainable industrial sector.
