Driven by soaring two- and three-wheeler adoption, India’s EV market raced past one million sales in 2024-25, says Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy at a FADA event.
India’s electric vehicle (EV) market has crossed a major milestone with over one million units sold in 2024-25, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy announced on Wednesday.
Speaking in a video address at the Auto Retail Conclave organised by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the minister said the country is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
The shift is being driven by strong adoption in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments, which are central to India’s mobility landscape, he noted.
According to official data, electric two-wheeler sales grew 21%, while electric three-wheeler sales surged 57% during the fiscal year. This rise reflects a broader trend of consumers and businesses shifting away from internal combustion engine vehicles towards cleaner alternatives.
Kumaraswamy described the transformation as a turning point for the automobile industry. He highlighted that the sector is not only transitioning from petrol and diesel to clean mobility but is also expanding its ambitions from meeting domestic demand to aiming for a stronger global presence.
With demand for affordable and efficient EVs accelerating, industry experts believe India is entering a decisive phase.
The minister also underlined the government’s commitment to supporting this transition through policy measures, incentives, and collaboration with industry players. He stressed that clean mobility will play a crucial role in shaping India’s sustainable growth and in meeting its environmental commitments.
