Driven by PLI-backed smartphone production, India’s electronics exports hit a record US$47 billion in 2025, says IT Minister, creating millions of jobs and boosting manufacturing.
India closed 2025 with its highest-ever electronics exports, valued at US$47 billion, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on January 19, 2026. Smartphone shipments, largely supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, accounted for nearly US$30 billion of the total.
The minister said electronics exports have expanded elevenfold since 2014–15, when the current government took office. Electronics has now become India’s third-largest export category, creating around 2.5 million jobs. The sector has also seen strong participation from women, new opportunities for MSMEs, and sustained skill development for young workers.
Overall electronics production has grown six times over the past 11 years, while exports have risen eightfold. Annual production increased from ₹1.9 trillion in 2014–15 to ₹11.3 trillion in 2024–25. During the same period, exports jumped from ₹380 billion to ₹3.3 billion.
Under the PLI scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing, investments of more than ₹134.75 billion have been attracted so far. This has resulted in cumulative production worth ₹9.8 trillion, according to the minister.
India is now the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturing hub. The number of mobile manufacturing units has grown from just two a decade ago to around 300 today. Nearly 99.2 per cent of mobile phones sold in the country are now made locally.
Mobile phone production rose sharply from ₹180 billion in 2014–15 to Rs 5.5 lakh crore in 2024–25. Exports increased from a negligible ₹10 billion to ₹2 trillion over the same period.
The government initially focused on assembling finished products. It is now shifting attention to components, modules, raw materials and manufacturing equipment. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) is supporting this transition.
Global firms remain confident, Indian companies are scaling up, and job creation continues, the minister said, calling it a clear outcome of the Make in India programme.
