Triggering a sharp decline in Indian export volumes and revenues in FY25, China halts quartz imports from India.
India’s quartz export to China has seen a sharp decline and losing one-third of the export market. From exporting 1378kt (kilo tonnes) in 2024, to just 916 kt in FY25, which is a 34 per cent drop. China imported 626kt of quartz from India in 2024, but decreased to 137kt in 2025.
The reason lies in China ramping up its domestic high-purity quartz reserve, totalling over 35 million metric tons in Xinjiang province and Henan province. This is after the Chinese government stepped in to back up local mining and processing facilities in 2023.
India has seen a steady increase in exporting quartz for three consecutive years, from 693kt in FY21 to 1378kt in FY24. This drop in quartz export comes just after the government promotions in mineral export through initiatives like the Districts as Export Hubs programme and the Export Promotion Mission announced in the Union Budget 2025-26.
Despite the decreasing export of quartz, India continues to meet domestic demand, with imports limited to just 4000 tonnes in FY25. Production in states like Rajasthan has been on a steady rise, driven by increased demand from the solar and electronics industries.
