The programme will receive ₹165 crore in funding from the World Bank
The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the creation of an independent Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence to strengthen the state’s digital and innovation ecosystem.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting in Mumbai chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. As part of the restructuring, the existing Information Technology Directorate will be upgraded into the Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Commissionerate, aiming to accelerate growth in IT, AI, and digital governance.
In another key move, the Cabinet approved setting up the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) as a company to enhance capabilities in road information systems, urban planning, and initiatives like the Jalayukta Shivar scheme.
The state also cleared the Maharashtra Resilient Development Programme (MRDP), which will mobilise private capital for disaster management. The programme will receive ₹165 crore in funding from the World Bank. It includes relief measures such as concessional home loans for affected citizens and loan and insurance support for MSMEs.
Additionally, preventive measures will be implemented to improve floodwater drainage in cities like Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ichalkaranji, along with efforts to mitigate risks in the Krishna River Basin.
The Cabinet further approved the establishment of the Maharashtra Geotechnology Application Centre Company and financial restructuring of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL – Mahavitaran), reinforcing the state’s push towards technological advancement and infrastructure resilience.
