Marking its largest Asian investment, Microsoft commits US$17.5 billion in India to expand cloud infrastructure, train millions, and bring advanced AI to national platforms and informal workers.
Microsoft has announced a US$17.5 billion investment to advance India’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The tech giant clarified that this marks its most significant commitment in Asia to date.
The funds will be deployed over four years, from 2026 to 2029, and will build on an earlier US$3 billion programme already underway. The company also highlighted that the move marks a pivotal stage in India’s transition from digital public infrastructure to a broad-based AI economy.
The announcement followed a meeting between Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Both leaders discussed India’s AI ambitions and the need for large-scale infrastructure, skills and sovereign systems.
A major portion of the funding will support hyperscale data centre expansion, including the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, scheduled to go live in mid-2026. Microsoft said, “We will have the largest hyperscale presence in India with our new data centre going live mid-2026.” The company will also expand its presence in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.
AI will also be embedded across national platforms. Microsoft confirmed that advanced AI tools will be integrated into the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s e-Shram and National Career Service systems. This aims to benefit almost 310 million informal workers through multilingual access, AI-based job matching and predictive analytics.
The company is doubling its skill development goal to 20 million people by 2030. “Doubling our skilling commitment to 20 million by 2030,” Microsoft said, stressing that a skilled workforce is essential for India’s AI-ready future.
Industry leaders welcomed the move. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said it “signals India’s rise as a reliable technology partner for the world.” Microsoft India President Puneet Chandok added that the initiative is focused on “turning India’s AI ambition into impact for every citizen.”
