Licences will be distributed over six months alongside a research study at IIT-Madras on how AI tools affect teaching and learning.
OpenAI has launched an India-focused Learning Accelerator, announced on 25 August 2025. The programme includes 500,000 free ChatGPT licences for teachers and students and a ₹45 million research grant to IIT-Madras. Licences will be distributed over six months.
Distribution will run with the Ministry of Education and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), with priority for government schools and AICTE-regulated institutions. Access includes access to training tools for student engagement and student access to Study Mode and interactive quizzes.
A research partnership with IIT-Madras will study the impact on teaching practices using AI tools in classroom, learning outcomes and cognitive development. Findings are planned for public release to inform sector practice and product design.
Includes support for 11 Indian languages and operation on basic smartphones. The company has added a lower-priced subscription in India with UPI payments and opened a New Delhi office to support rollout.
Programme management will be led by Raghav Gupta, OpenAI’s Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. Key deliverables include licence distribution, educator training, and longitudinal research from IIT-Madras.
Near-term milestones include licence distribution, educator training and partner onboarding. Sector tracking will focus on uptake, measured learning outcomes and cost models.
No financial guidance or user targets were disclosed beyond licence volume and the six-month window.
