Signing two agreements, SECI and the Andhra Pradesh government move ahead with a major battery storage system and a hybrid solar project, to enhance the state’s power network.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and the Andhra Pradesh government have recently formalised two major renewable-power projects. As per the agreements, the state has approved the development of a 1200MWh battery energy storage system in Nandyal and a 50MW hybrid solar project.
The announcements were confirmed during the Energy Session of the Andhra Pradesh Partnership Summit 2025 in Visakhapatnam.
Both projects will be delivered under the capital-expenditure model. SECI will fund, construct and operate the assets. This approach gives the agency full control over design and execution. It also removes financial burden from the state while ensuring rapid rollout.
The Ministry of Power had earlier mandated SECI to implement the large-scale storage system under Market-Based Operations. The direction was issued on 23 January 2025. SECI’s board, led by Chairman Santosh Kumar Sarangi, cleared the project in October. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has since been monitoring progress to ensure timely approvals and alignment with national targets.
The Government Orders were handed over by Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand and NREDCAP Vice-Chairman M. Kamalakara Babu were also present. SECI was represented by officials Sivakumar Venkat Vepakomma and Rohit Choubey.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the projects represent a crucial step in enhancing grid stability and increasing storage capacity to support the growing share of renewables. The Nandyal system is expected to play a vital role in improving reliability across the state’s power network.
SECI stated that it remains committed to working with state governments and central ministries to scale up clean-energy assets nationwide.
