Securing a ₹45 billion contract, Tata, Cyient and Applied Materials will upgrade the SCL semiconductor fab in Mohali.
Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing, Cyient Semiconductors and global chip equipment major Applied Materials have emerged as the lowest bidders for three key packages under the ₹45 billion modernisation programme of the Semi Conductor Laboratory in Mohali, marking a major step in India’s push to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
The upgrade of the state run facility is a core part of India’s semiconductor mission and is aimed at significantly enhancing the technological capabilities and production readiness of SCL, which is currently the country’s only public sector wafer fabrication unit. The government has reiterated that SCL will remain fully under government ownership, even as it partners with private players for technology, equipment and services.
According to people familiar with the development, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test has been selected as the lowest bidder for Package 1, which focuses on upgrading SCL’s 8 inch CMOS wafer fabrication line. The package is intended to improve the scale, yield and maturity of the fab, enabling it to support a wider range of applications.
Cyient Semiconductors and Applied Materials have emerged as the lowest bidders for the other two packages, which cover critical areas such as advanced process equipment, tooling and engineering support required for the modernisation of the facility. Applied Materials is among the world’s leading suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, while Cyient brings design and engineering expertise to the programme.
