“We Aim To Be A Global Brand—One That Happens To Be From India, Not Just An Indian Alternative”

From design to development and manufacturing, Univlabs in Gurugram is setting new standards in surgical innovation, which is entirely made in India.

“Every journey has three phases—rejection, apprehension, and acceptance,” says Sunil Singh, Founder and CEO of Univlabs. “We built Univlabs to endure them all.” In 2015, Sunil asked a bold question: Can India build world-class surgical tech, by Indians, for Indian needs, and still compete globally? Today, Univlabs is that answer—trusted in operating rooms across India and beyond, proving that innovation can be made, not imported.

Behind every product is a team that combines medical insight with deep-tech expertise. Sunil Singh leads the way, joined by Co-founder Dr Anil Mandhani, one of India’s foremost urologists. The broader leadership includes veterans from top healthcare and technology companies such as Novartis, Kerry Bio Science, and Karl Storz. This is a team that blends clinical credibility with a sharp focus on execution—and above all, they share a belief that India can lead, not follow, in MedTech.

Univlabs stands out in MedTech by offering innovative, high-quality, and affordable medical devices that are fully designed and manufactured in India. Unlike competitors who rely on imported parts and local assembly, Univlabs develops everything in-house—including electronics, mechatronics, mechanical components, and software—ensuring full control over quality, cost, and customisation. It is among the few Indian companies building complete endoscopy and urology systems from the ground up.

Their systems are highly modular and customisable. While traditional devices are rigid and require costly, time-consuming international coordination for changes, Univlabs provides adjustable, flexible modes that allow surgeons to customise image and colour settings to meet their precise surgical needs. Local design and service capabilities enable faster support and greater adaptability.

They have integrated artificial intelligence into their 4K endoscopy tower, enabling remote surgical collaboration. Expert surgeons anywhere in the world can watch live surgeries, annotate in real time, and guide the operating surgeon through a secure, AI-powered interface. This is the first such solution of its kind developed in India and is being built at Univlabs’ Bengaluru office under the leadership of R&D Director Sreedhar Anjanappa.

Univlabs is innovating surgical solutions with a focus on safety, performance, sustainability, and automation. Gurpreet Singh, head of R&D, highlights Am-SafeX, a catheter with markers to prevent urethral injury, and a biodegradable ureteral stent in development with IIT Roorkee. These innovations demonstrate a focus on safety, sustainability, performance, and automation. Recognised by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, DGHS, and Armed Forces surgeons, Univlabs has delivered 36x returns on the Ministry’s investment. Customer feedback averages 4.5 stars for quality, documentation, and service.

By leveraging local suppliers, in-house R&D, and vertically integrated manufacturing, Univlabs delivers products that match or surpass the functionality of global brands at significantly lower prices. Its devices are developed in line with required quality standards such as ISO 13485 and IEC safety standards. The design process adheres to global best practices and is managed using internationally recognised and accredited tools and methods, ensuring high reliability and traceability.

Looking ahead, Univlabs is preparing to incorporate robotics and advanced AI into its surgical platforms. Prototypes of next-generation cameras and integrated systems are under development—technologies currently dominated by global giants such as Stryker and Olympus. Univlabs, however, aims to deliver these at accessible price points for Indian hospitals and clinics, including those in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Univlabs, with 16 patents (4 granted), offers highly customisable surgical products for diverse specialities and hospital sizes. Its adaptability ensures faster, more reliable service, earning the trust of top hospitals across India, including AIIMS and Fortis. Among the top four players in India’s endovision surgical instruments market, Univlabs competes with global firms valued at over $12 billion. The company is expanding rapidly, serving healthcare providers across India and in overseas markets globally.

Univlabs isn’t positioning itself as a low-cost alternative to Western brands—it’s redefining surgical innovation with a focus on quality, proudly from India. “We do not just want to be an Indian alternative to global brands,” says Sunil. “We want to be the global brand that just happens to be from India.” This mindset is already transforming operating rooms across the country. With engineers, surgeons, and visionaries at the helm, Univlabs is driving the next wave of smart, accessible, and homegrown healthcare technology—building the future of surgery, one procedure at a time.
