Global Electronics Association Relaunches Double Materiality Toolkit for Electronics Industry

Toolkit helps companies address double materiality expectations under CSRD and ESRS

The Global Electronics Association has relaunched its Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) Toolkit for the Electronics Industry, providing an updated framework to help electronics companies assess sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities amid evolving corporate reporting requirements.

The revised toolkit incorporates recent developments related to the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). It also includes updated context on the EU Sustainability Omnibus package and simplified guidance for companies navigating changing reporting expectations.

The updated toolkit supports both top-down and bottom-up approaches to double materiality assessment. It also provides guidance for organisations that may only be required to assess impact materiality, rather than conducting a full financial materiality assessment.

According to the association, the resource is aimed at sustainability, ESG, compliance, corporate reporting, risk, supply chain, procurement and operations teams across the electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

This includes EMS providers, PCB and semiconductor manufacturers, OEMs, component and wire harness manufacturers and electronics suppliers, as well as companies serving the industrial, automotive, aerospace and defence, and medical electronics sectors.

The toolkit is intended to help companies translate double materiality concepts into a structured assessment process, identify significant sustainability impacts across their operations and value chains, and prioritise sustainability topics relevant to business strategy and reporting readiness.

It also includes Sustainability Context Reports, which can help organisations examine relevant sustainability topics, value-chain considerations and potential impacts.

“Double materiality assessment process can feel overwhelming, especially as reporting expectations continue to shift,” said Dr. Kelly Scanlon, Senior Director, Sustainability Strategy, Global Electronics Association. “The updated DMA Toolkit gives sustainability, risk, compliance, reporting and operations teams a structured approach they can apply whether they are beginning the process, refining an existing approach or focusing specifically on impact materiality.”

For companies required to assess only impact materiality, the association said the toolkit’s core process and resources remain applicable. Such organisations can use it to develop an evidence-based assessment of their most significant sustainability impacts without undertaking a full financial materiality assessment.

The relaunch comes as electronics manufacturers with European operations, customers or value-chain exposure increasingly need to understand how evolving sustainability reporting requirements could affect their operations and business relationships.
