Lam Research to Invest $1.2bn in First Indian Silicon Production Plant

US chip toolmaker commits capital to establish local manufacturing and scale R&D operations.

US semiconductor equipment manufacturer Lam Research has announced plans to invest nearly $1.2 billion (10,000 crore rupees) over the coming years to build its first silicon component manufacturing facility in India. The move marks a significant expansion of the company’s operations in the country, where it will also scale up its research and development capabilities.

The proposed plant will establish a vertically integrated manufacturing setup spanning silicon ingot production and processing, serving advanced semiconductor technologies and leading-edge nodes. The concurrent R&D expansion builds upon the firm’s existing India Center for Engineering, which provides design, testing, validation, and technology development for Lam’s global customer base.

Rangesh Raghavan, Corporate Vice President and Managing Director of Lam Research India, noted that the investment reflects the firm’s confidence in the nation’s technical talent, expanding semiconductor infrastructure, and supportive policy framework. He added that the company will continue collaborating with government bodies, academic institutions, local suppliers, and start-ups to drive chip innovation.

Beyond direct high-technology job creation, the investment aims to develop a skilled workforce and broaden local engineering expertise. This builds on Lam’s existing initiatives, including a partnership with the Indian Institute of Science and the India Semiconductor Mission to train up to 60,000 students via its Semiverse Solutions virtual platform, alongside its dedicated Skill Development Program.
