L&T Expects To Capture 20% Of The Market With The Partnership Of EVR Motors

The motors will be manufactured at the L&T Facility in Coimbatore.

To accelerate EV adoption in India, Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Electronics Products & Systems (LTEPS) business has collaborated with EVR Motors. Through this partnership, they plan to develop and manufacture next-generation traction motors and integrated electric drivetrains in India.

In an exclusive interaction with EFY, Prashant Chiranjive Jain, Head of Electronics Products & Systems at L&T and Sudeepth Puthumana, Head of Mobility, L&T Electronics Products & Systems, revealed that the partnership is part of the company’s major plan to build indigenous capabilities across mobility electronics, power electronics, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

For EVR Motors’ patented motor technology, L&T will provide its manufacturing and electronics capabilities, as well as market reach support. Both companies plan to provide whole electric drivetrain solutions, including motors, motor control units (MCUs), and gearboxes for two- and three-wheelers, passenger and commercial vehicles, and buses.

While discussing the reason for choosing EVR, Puthumana mentioned that EVR’s technology stood out for its unique intellectual property, compact design, lower material consumption, and performance advantages. The motor uses a trapezoidal rotor-coil architecture and Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) core technology, enabling improved flux utilisation, reduced copper usage, and reduced dependence on rare-earth materials.

“The technology delivers a smaller form factor, higher torque density, and significant material savings, making it highly competitive for the Indian EV market,” Jain said.

During the interview, both spokespersons claimed that the motors can deliver 5–10% higher vehicle range from the same battery pack while improving motor efficiency by 2–4%. Jain also mentioned that the design can reduce rare-earth material dependency by 50–100%, depending on the motor variant.

The motors will be manufactured at the L&T Facility in Coimbatore, where it is expanding its electronics manufacturing footprint. An initial production line is expected to become operational shortly, with larger-scale automated manufacturing facilities being developed as demand grows.

The company is already engaging with EV manufacturers across multiple vehicle segments and expects prototypes to reach customers in the coming months. Commercial integration is targeted around the festive season, with production ramping up thereafter.

Puthumana believes the partnership could capture 10–20% of India’s EV motor and drivetrain market over the next five years.

Apart from EV motors, L&T is also making a broader mobility electronics portfolio, which includes onboard chargers, integrated powertrain systems, vehicle connectivity solutions, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) tailored for Indian driving conditions.

As India’s EV penetration continues to rise, L&T sees electrification as a strategic opportunity not only for mobility but also for strengthening the country’s energy security and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“We want to build a credible Indian platform for EV drives and motors that are designed, developed, and manufactured in India,” Jain said.

With homegrown manufacturing, advanced motor technology, and a growing EV ecosystem, the partnership between L&T and EVR Motors can emerge as a major player in India’s next phase of electric mobility growth.
