Following the Prime Minister’s appeal to cut fossil fuel reliance, Gujarat is accelerating efforts to expand electric mobility across public and private sectors.
The Gujarat government has begun drafting a comprehensive action plan aimed at reducing the state’s dependence on petrol and diesel, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national call to accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy and sustainable mobility.
Senior officials said the state is reviewing its electric mobility framework while simultaneously strengthening charging infrastructure to support wider electric vehicle (EV) adoption. As part of the initiative, authorities are preparing a revised version of the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy, which was originally introduced in 2021 to encourage the purchase and use of electric vehicles.
The existing policy offered financial incentives for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers, along with capital subsidies for establishing EV charging stations and exemptions from electricity duty. Despite these measures, Gujarat has not yet ranked among India’s leading states in EV adoption, prompting policymakers to reassess strategy and implementation gaps.
Minister of State for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Pravin Mali said the government is coordinating with multiple departments to design a new policy framework that promotes EV usage across both public and private sectors. The upcoming action plan is expected to encourage electrification of government vehicle fleets while also improving accessibility for individual consumers and businesses.
Officials indicated that expanding charging infrastructure will remain a central priority, as range anxiety and limited charging availability continue to slow adoption. The revised policy may introduce stronger incentives, improved infrastructure deployment and closer coordination between transport, energy and urban planning authorities.
The move reflects Gujarat’s broader effort to support India’s climate commitments by lowering transport emissions, improving air quality and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. By updating its EV policy and accelerating infrastructure development, the state aims to create a more supportive ecosystem for electric mobility and drive long-term sustainable transportation growth.
