A global tech leap, student upskilling, and international ambition—Kaynes Semicon plants its first overseas chip design centre in Oman, fuelling digital dreams worldwide.
Kaynes Semicon, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology, has opened its first international chip design centre in Muscat, Oman. The facility was launched in partnership with Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and the Ministry of Labour.
The centre is dedicated to very large-scale integration (VLSI) design and will support both front-end and back-end chip development. It is fully funded by the Omani government.
Kaynes Semicon CEO Raghu Panicker said the centre would equip students with essential skills in advanced semiconductor processes, including integrated circuit design, chip fabrication, and wafer preparation. The programme plans to train between 80 and 100 students each year.
Ramesh Kannan, managing director of Kaynes Technology, stated the expansion marks a step towards building a global semiconductor ecosystem, beyond India.
Ali Al Shidhani, Deputy Minister at MTCIT, underlined the project’s alignment with Oman’s national programme for digital economy. He called the semiconductor sector a cornerstone of the country’s future digital infrastructure and economy.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy by both parties to develop talent and infrastructure in high-tech industries. It also supports Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to diversify the economy and strengthen innovation-led growth.
In parallel, Kaynes Semicon is pushing forward with its domestic goals in India. The company is on track to produce India’s first packaged semiconductor chip by July 2025.
An outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility is being set up in Sanand, Gujarat, following a ₹33.07 billion investment approved in September 2024. The plant aims to deliver a production capacity of 6.3 million chips per day.
With the Muscat design centre now operational, Kaynes Semicon has expanded its research and development footprint, reinforcing its position in the global semiconductor market.
