Backed by India’s ‘Make in India’ push, L&T and BEL are uniting to drive the AMCA programme, set to shape the country’s fifth-generation fighter jet ambitions.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) have announced a collaboration to support India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, the country’s ambitious fifth-generation fighter jet initiative.
In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, L&T confirmed that the consortium will participate in the Expression of Interest issued by the Aeronautical Development Agency, the government body overseeing the project. A formal response is expected in the coming weeks.
The collaboration is set to pool L&T’s engineering and systems integration expertise with BEL’s strength in defence electronics. Together, the companies aim to accelerate the development of the AMCA and contribute to India’s long-term goal of self-reliance in aerospace and defence technology.
According to a report by the Financial Express, S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, described the partnership as a significant milestone in modernising India’s defence capabilities. He noted that both organisations were leaders in their respective domains and said their combined efforts would play an important role in strengthening national security and advancing self-reliance.
BEL Chairman and Managing Director Manoj Jain observed that the AMCA project reflected India’s growing maturity in defence technology. He stated that with L&T’s expertise in systems integration and BEL’s strength in defence electronics, the consortium was confident of delivering a world-class solution for the Indian Air Force.
The AMCA is intended to replace ageing fleets of Mirage-2000s and Jaguars in the 2030s. The Indian Air Force has set a production target of around 125 to 140 aircraft.
